During The Storm
Safety should always be the top priority in any emergency. Being prepared and taking the right precautions can reduce risks and protect lives. Avoid hazardous areas, follow emergency guidelines, and ensure access to vital supplies. Awareness and quick decision-making can make a difference, so stay alert and ready to act when needed.
01 - Stay Indoors
▶Remaining indoors during a hurricane is crucial for safety. Strong winds, flying debris, flooding, and sudden weather changes create life-threatening conditions outside. Even if the storm appears to weaken, or the eye passes overhead bringing temporary calm, the danger isn’t over. The eye of the storm is surrounded by the hurricane’s strongest winds, which can return suddenly and violently. Stepping outside during the eye can put you at extreme risk, as conditions can shift in an instant. Stay indoors at all times until officials confirm the storm has fully passed.
02 - Stay Informed
▶When a storm hits, clear and reliable communication is key. Stay ahead of the situation by monitoring local news and city alerts, and subscribe to CODE RED for real-time storm updates.

03 - Keep Calm
▶Keeping calm during a storm is essential for making safe and rational decisions. Panic can lead to confusion, rushed actions, or missed critical steps in an emergency plan. Staying composed allows you to assess the situation, follow instructions, and protect yourself and others effectively. It also helps maintain clear communication, ensuring that everyone stays informed and safe. A calm mind is a prepared mind, and staying level-headed can make all the difference until the storm passes.
04 - Avoid Flooded Areas
▶Flooded areas can be extremely dangerous and should always be avoided. Floodwaters may seem shallow, but they can quickly become deep and unpredictable. They hide strong currents, debris, and toxic contaminants like bacteria and oil—and in some areas, even alligators. Roads and walkways might be unstable or completely washed away, increasing the risk of injury or getting stranded. Even a few inches of water can disable vehicles and make walking hazardous. Turn around, don’t drown. 🌊⚠️
05 - Power Loss
▶Ensure you have essential items ready for 3 to 5 days.
- 🔋 Charge ALL devices – Phones, tablets, power banks, and even gaming consoles.
- 🔌 Backup power options – Generators, solar chargers, and battery packs = lifelines.
- ⚠️ Know your generator safety – Never run it indoors or near windows or doors.
- 💧 Freeze water bottles – They double as ice packs AND drinking water when they melt.
- ❄️ Turn fridge/freezer to the coldest setting – Keeps food safe longer during outages.
- 🥫 Stock up on no-cook snacks – Because lukewarm canned food is better than nothing.
- 🔦 Have LED lanterns & flashlights – Your phone flashlight won’t last 36 hours.
- 🌬️ Prep for no A/C – Battery-operated fans, damp towels, and cooling cloths.
- 📡 Stay informed – Keep a battery-powered radio or weather app with push alerts.
