TAMARAC, Fla. (November 14, 2023) – The City of Tamarac is proud to announce its campaign to become a designated Autism Friendly City, in partnership with Neuro Consulting Solutions (NCS) and Helping Adults with Autism Perform & Excel (HAAPE). Autism Friendly designations are awarded by NCS to organizations that have completed training to meet the diverse needs of people with autism and individuals with related disabilities. Proposed during the Sept. 12, City Commission Workshop, members of the City Commission unanimously agreed to pursue the designation. Together, HAAPE and NCS will provide Tamarac’s elected leaders and staff with autism friendly training. The organizations will also train Tamarac’s first responders to identify signs of autism in individuals they encounter in the line of duty. HAAPE and NCS will also help develop a comprehensive plan for Tamarac Parks and Recreation personnel to enhance programming to accommodate community members with autism. In support of the initiative, the Broward Sheriff's Office-Tamarac District will proudly wrap a patrol vehicle with colorful puzzle pieces to recognize individuals with autism and their families. Once designated, Tamarac will join Cooper City, Parkland and Weston, as the fourth Autism Friendly City in Broward County.
